Thursday August 16th

Posted 08-16-12 by gregwilliams

Home.  8045.2 miles for me.  I arrived in St. Louis on Wednesday evening about dusk, and I mentioned already the nachos and the water. What I didn't mention was "The Checking of The Map".  The C of T M is traditional on most nights, whether it be the iPhone or some crazy esoteric analog thing, like a paper atlas. As an aside, what in the heck did we ever do without smartphones?  I looked at the distances I'd covered, and how close to home I was compared to where I'd started...

Wednesday August 15th

Posted 08-15-12 by gregwilliams

Landed gently in St. Louis MO about an hour ago. Just long enough to take a shower and get a plate of nachos and 3 large glasses of water from the restaurant on the property. It wasn't exactly that hot today, I just seemed to need more and more water. Can't get enough of the stuff right now.  I allowed myself to sleep in this morning after last night's late arrival, and didn't hit the pavement until 10:45 CDT. I still managed to cover 615 miles and check in before 9 pm. I also took time at...

Monday / Tuesday August 13th & 14th - Chrome's Reflections

Posted 08-15-12 by gregwilliams

Tuesday August 14th Currently I’m sitting in the waiting area at Black Hills H-D. I decided to stop for an oil and filter change rather than drive it any further on 6200-mile oil. The synth oil is supposed to be good for at least 5K, but it was time for a break anyway. While in Seattle, coming back into town on the last day of the ride, I noticed my right thigh was getting hotter and hotter. Took me a while to figure that one out since it was a new experience, but by the time I had gotten to...

Sunday August 12th - Chrome's Reflections

Posted 08-12-12 by gregwilliams

Well, we did it, we did it. We said that we would do it and we did it, we did it (with apologies to the lyricist of My Fair Lady). I was telling Bill and Alice at breakfast that these first mornings after the rides remind me of the nights when the show is all packed on the truck and the doors close. There's a vague sense of longing and loss as you watch the truck drive away. You've made new friends and renewed some old friendships, but now, just when you get into the groove of the gig, it's...

Day 6 - Chrome's Reflections

Posted 08-10-12 by gregwilliams

It's 6 am here in Madras, OR, at the lovely Madras Best Western. Yesterday's ride from Ashland to here was the yin and yang of motorcycle roads. We started off in serious twisties and ended on straighter-than-straight two-lane.  My good friend DGB has done a very eloquent job of describing the dynamics of group riding in one of his posts. I won't belabor the point too much, but *please*, if you are driving or pulling an RV, and you see a group of motorcycles behind you on a two-lane road,...

Day 1 and Day 2 - Chrome Reflections

Posted 08-06-12 by gregwilliams

Well, we are finally underway after months of planning and anticipation. 17 bikes, up to 31 people (some come and others leave), and a lot of good times.  The group is riding together pretty well. We've had a couple of splits at stop lights and such, but for the most part everyone is riding rightly and tightly.  The ride to Vancouver was highlighted by the stretch of the Chuckanutt highway north of Deception Pass, which was very cool on its own.  Dinner at The Whip, amazing ice...

Day 0 - The Gathering (Chrome)

Posted 08-04-12 by gregwilliams

Last night I stayed with Alice's sister, her husband, and their new baby. Those folks will join us for a night at Kalaloch Lodge in a few days. Alice and I arrived at the hotel at around 5:15, after an hour long jaunt through Seattle's "gotcha" maze of streets and traffic. It was so good to see old friends again, and to welcome the new riders and passengers!  So, welcome to Mimi, Julie, Bob, Patrick, Christina (in absentia, missed her flight), Rebecca. The most excellent hotel staff gave...

Chrome's Ride to Th' Ride - Thursday August 2nd

Posted 08-02-12 by gregwilliams

Helena MT to Seattle WA 614.5 miles today, 3180.1 miles total for the pre-ride. Another spectacular day of riding, but it started off with a bit of slight panic. One of our riders was arriving tonight in Seattle, so I needed to add a hotel room for Thursday for him and his wife. So although I woke up at o'dark:thirty, I had to wait a while until it was at least 8 in Seattle. I'm glad he and his wife were arriving a day early! When I called the hotel to add one room for Thursday in addition to...

Chrome's Ride to Th' Ride - Wednesday August 1st

Posted 08-02-12 by gregwilliams

2565 miles so far, 730+ for today. For every down, there's an up - right? That's today's ride in a nutshell.  I left Rugby ND in brisk morning air, time to zip up the jacket! Rugby, by the way, is the geographic center of North America, just in case you're wondering. By the time I reached Minot, the clouds were gathering, and it wasn't getting any warmer. Just west of Minot, I made a quick stop for gas, just long enough for the train crossing guard up the road to drop just as I arrived. A...

Chrome's Ride to Th' Ride - Tuesday July 31st

Posted 07-31-12 by gregwilliams

Another glorious day in the constant search for Ride Nirvana. I did get a somewhat late start out of Madison WI, due to the fact I made the mistake of taking a couple of large gulps last night out of a bottle of Pepsi. The caffeine really did a number on me, and I was awake until the crashing thunderstorms subsided around 2 a.m.  I rolled out around 8:45, intending to make Minot ND, at 725 miles or so. Well, I got half that goal - 764.4 miles for the day, but I only made it to Rugby ND, 60...
