The Long Reach Long Riders reach fundraising milestone.
The Long Reach Long Riders are happy to announce they've reached a fundraising milestone. With donations of more than $35,000.00 for this year's ride, the total raised since they began the ride in 2004 has now topped $200,000.00
"We're obviously thrilled," said Bill Sapsis one of the founding members of the group. "It's hard to believe that what we thought was going to be a one time event has grown into such a popular ride." Greg Williams, one of the organizers of this years' ride added, "What makes reaching this goal all the more satisfying is the fact we did it during a difficult economy."
This year's ride, their sixth, begins on July 31st in Richmond, VA and meanders through the Blue ridge and Smokey Mountains before ending in Georgia on August 7th. The riders all pay their own way on the trip so all of the money donated goes directly to the two charities; Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids and the ESTA Foundation's Behind the Scenes program. The Long Reach Long Riders Ride Again
The Long Reach Long Riders announce the schedule and route of their 6th annual charity motorcycle ride. The 2009 trip begins in Richmond, Virginia on July 31 and ends on August 6 in Dahlonega, Georgia. A press release notes that the tour will includes "places like Cades Cove and Bear Gap," and participants will "see some of the prettiest country and ride some of the best bike roads east of the Mississippi."
The Long Reach Long Riders began their charity ride in 2004 as a one-time event. The idea was to ride from Boone North Carolina to Long Beach, California to attend the USITT conference, raising money for charity along the way. The trip was so much fun for the participants, and the fundraising went so well, that it was decided to turn the run into an annual event. Since 2004, the LRLR have ridden to Rapid City, South Dakota twice, meandered through New England and, on last year's trip, spent a week rumbling through the great canyons of the Southwest. Over the past five years the rides have covered close to 20,000 miles and have raised over $170,000.00.
Greg Williams and Alice Neff, founding members of the LRLR, are the 2009 Ride Marshals. "From a cruise up Grandfather Mountain to a ride through Deal's Gap and The Dragon's Tail, we've put together a ride that has scenery to wow even the most jaded traveler and roads that will satisfy the varying skill levels of the riders," says Williams. "Special thanks to Moe and Christine Conn for helping us map the route. We'd like as many people as possible to join the ride, of course, because the more riders we have, the more money we raise. I'm hoping that we set new records for not only the number of riders but also the amount of money raised."
The charities that benefit from the annual ride are Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The ESTA Foundation's Behind the Scenes program.
